What is counselling?

Counselling is not about just receiving advice. It is quite different from the general opinion held by people. It is a process where you discuss your concerns and problems with someone who can really help you.

Going for a counselling session in no way indicates that you are helpless or incapable of solving your problems. Anytime you share your problems or concerns with a counsellor you will deepen your understanding of your problem and develop the means to deal with them.

What kind of problems can I discuss with a counsellor?

You can talk with us about anything and everything. You can discuss your personal problems, academic problems, emotional issues, and career awareness. These may include stress-related problems, exam anxiety, personal problems, peer pressure, substance abuse, lack of focus in academics, laziness, time management, inability to concentrate, and career-related queries.

How do I present my issues?

It doesn't really matter how you present your problem. You can say whatever you like. You can share your thoughts in any way that feels comfortable to you. Sometimes there is silence, sometimes you might find yourself saying things you had not expected to say. The counsellor will help you explore the concerns and clarify your understanding.

What will the counsellor think of me - will they judge me?

Firstly, we are not here to judge your actions. It is essential to understand that our primary goal is to help you out without being non-judgmental, empathetic, and supportive. We understand that everyone makes mistakes and it is normal to need several goes before you get something right. It's normal to seek help when things don't go as planned, and we are here to assist you in finding solutions to your problems.

What if I feel ashamed of my problems?

Feeling ashamed of your problems is a common concern, but it's important to realize that counselling can be a valuable step toward addressing and overcoming the issues that cause you shame or discomfort. We do accept that it is natural to feel shame when you have problems and you don't want to advertise your difficulties. We recognize that and emphasize confidentiality to make you feel more comfortable sharing your concerns.

How confidential is counselling?

At Sunshine, we prioritize strict confidentiality. Maintaining trust and privacy is a legitimate expectation from the student’s perspective. Your discussions with us are kept private, and whatever you share is resolved and deleted when you leave the session. You will be filled with only one thing and that is trust in sunshine.

If I have had counselling, does it go on my record?

Seeking counselling will not be recorded on your academic or personal record. Your privacy is protected.

Can I seek advice for a friend or colleague?

If you want to seek advice on behalf of a friend or colleague, you are welcome to do so. We'll do our best to assist you in helping your friend while maintaining your anonymity.

How do I know if I need counselling?

Some signs that you may need counselling, include:

Feeling overwhelmed or stressed

Having difficulty sleeping or eating

Feeling anxious or depressed

Having difficulty concentrating or making decisions

Withdrawing from social activities

Having thoughts of self-harm or suicide

Counselling is a positive step toward addressing any challenges or concerns you may have. Reaching out to counsellors for a counselling session is a straightforward process. You can write an email/make a call to the counsellors regarding your problem and discuss about the further procedure for the counselling session.

What happens during a counselling session?

During a counselling session, you will have the opportunity to talk to a counsellor about your problems and concerns. The counsellor will listen to you and help you to explore your options. The counsellor may also provide you with information and resources.

Sunshine is the counselling cell of IIT Hyderabad that provides support to students in all aspects of their lives, including academic, personal, and social support.

Sunshine offers support in different ways, including counselling, mentorship, buddy programs, and, organizing events and workshops.

What programs does Sunshine offer?

Sunshine offers two programs: the Buddy Program and the Mentor Program.

Buddy Program: The Buddy Program matches the students with senior batch students who can provide support and guidance.

Mentor Program: Sunshine mentors are paired with first-year students to provide guidance and support you need to adjust and adapt to the Institute.

The counsellors at Sunshine can help you to develop coping mechanisms for academic stress, such as time management, study skills, and relaxation techniques. If you are struggling with academics, counsellors can help you to identify the root cause of the problem and develop a plan to address it. Sunshine can help you address any personal or social issues that may be interfering with your ability to focus on your studies.
